About
At Craft Fairs and Open Studios event the question I'm asked most is "How did you begin paper cutting?" To start with I felt a fraud telling people that I fell into paper cutting completely by accident, but that's the truth........and I'm a rubbish liar, my face goes red!
I used to always make Christmas cards to gift to friends and one year I cut shapes out of the front of the card and mounted coloured paper behind the cut outs.
After Christmas a friend, who'd received one of my cards, called for a catch up and said "I didn't realise you'd started paper cutting, how did you get into that?" My reply was "Am I? What's paper cutting!" As soon as we'd finished chatting, I went straight to the laptop and Googled "paper cutting" and I was astounded as all these beautiful designs and images popped up on my screen and I couldn't believe that I'd never see or heard of this amazing (and very ancient) art before.
The following Spring my cousin got married and I searched high and low to find a beautiful, unique, personalised gift go give him and his beautiful wife. I didn't want to "just" give them a present. I wanted it to be something for them to keep and treasure. As my search grew more fruitless I thought back to those paper cut images and I wondered if I could make them something to treasure.......and I did!
It took quite a bit of sketching and a couple of trials but my very first paper cut was born! I was so pleased with myself I showed it to anyone who visited our house! A friend asked me to make one for a wedding she was going to and my business grew from there.
